We can access the information regarding the above question from Cepi sources. The first report prepared for 2024 presents positive figures for the Paper and Pulp sector. When 2024 is compared to 2023, it is observed that there is a 5.2% increase in paper and cardboard production. However, in 2023, there were sharp decreases of -13% and even a cumulative -18.3% since 2021. The main effects of these decreases were realized as a result of negative macroeconomic trends, long-term stock reduction decisions in the supply chain and the negative reflection of high energy and production costs on the sector. In 2024, total sector production reached 77.8 million tons and an increase was observed in most paper and cardboard segments.
Similar trends have been observed worldwide.
In 2024, most paper and board producing countries, except Japan, have seen an increase in production. The USA, Brazil, Canada, China, India and South Korea have recorded an increase in paper production ranging from 1.5% to 5.5%. According to initial estimates, global paper and board production grew by 3.6% in 2024, completely recovering from the decline recorded in 2023 (-3.3%).
When we look at the paper group segments, packaging grades continue to be ahead of tissue and graphic papers in terms of growth. European market pulp production, which remained within the projected levels between 2019 and 2022, decreased slightly by -1.0% in 2024, in contrast to the growth observed in the previous year (+2.3%).
For Recycled Paper, the use of paper for recycling by companies in the geographical area covered by Cepi members increased by 4.1% compared to 2023. This reflects the positive development of paper and cardboard production in 2024 and comes after two consecutive years of decline. We wanted to provide you with brief information from the first report prepared for 2024 in the geography of CEPI members within the EU, located just on Turkey's western borders.
